Hi there and welcome. It’s Kerstin Jatho here from 4Seeds Consulting, a transformational coach who shifts people from languishing to flourishing. In this video, I want to talk to you about the misalignment between values and goals.

We all have goals that we want to strive for. They might be short-term goals, medium-term goals, or long-term goals, both in our personal lives or in our professional lives.

But what is critical is that these goals need to be aligning with our values, otherwise they feel like chores, and they lose their joy. So, in 2016, I started studying for my master’s degree, and I received my certification of completion cum laude. When I received it, I felt nothing which made me wonder, “what had happened?” Here I was striving for an outcome, a goal, something I was working hard towards for three years, but when I had the paper in my hand, I had no joy. And when I realised that, I realised that I’d lost one of my biggest values, which is the love of learning in the process.

And that is also where it becomes important when you are doing work or working with your teams is not just to focus on the goals and the outcomes and the future delivery that it has, but to bring in the heart, the value. So, when you say targets as a team, discuss them and see how they excite and delight each of you. And how are your values aligned with this and connected with it? Otherwise it just becomes a chore, another task to complete. And when it’s accomplished, there is no joy, no happiness, no fulfilment, no inner satisfaction, and that is not what you want to have achieved.

And in a team, it’s not always easy because we all have different values. Hence the process of aligning goals with key values of individuals takes a lot of discussion, makes it very powerful because once the heart is in the team on an objective that needs to be achieved, they are motivated, inspired, and are moving forward in that.

So always look at something that you need to do. And if it starts feeling like a drag or it becomes the last thing on your to-do list or something you don’t look forward to doing, or you’re just going through the motions, start questioning it, because you most probably have not aligned it anymore with your values. Be proud of your achievements and always align them.

Over to you for sharing your comments and experiences.
